Abstract
It was well established both in laboratory studies and case studies that constant b of frequency-magnitude relationship of earthquake statistics is inversely related to the stress in the earth's crust. As the state of stress along a fault or fault zone is variable, it is conceivable to think that the stress also variable and the locked section or sections along a fault, namely asperities, accumulate relatively higher stress than the surrounding fault areas. When an asperity fails or a mainshock takes, place the situation is reversed and asperities have lower stress than the surrounding fault area. Therefore, it was postulated that b values estimated from the aftershock seismicity should be higher over the asperities and should be lower over the surrounding fault areas. In this study, aftershock seismicity of the August 17, 1999 İzmit earthquake is used to map the spatial distribution of b and aftershock decay parameter p values both over earth surface and in depth domain along the rupture zones of the mainshock using a software package named ZMAP 6.0. For the 1999 İzmit mainshock it is determined that fault section with major moment release between Gölcük and east of the Sapanca lake still retained lower b values ( 0.85-1) and higher p values (1-1.3) while higher b values observed in west of Hersek Delta (b about 1.4-1.75, p about 0.7-1.0) and along the Karadere fault segment (KFS) of the surface rupture., There is almost no change from the published seismicity parameters determined from premainshock seismicity. As it was hypothesized and discussed in previous studies that the rupture properties may not be the only reason behind the change in the seismicity parameters after the mainshocks and the other geological and geophysical parameters in crust may also play a role.
