Abstract

Otitis media within its widest context, is the common name for the inflammatory disease of the middle ear mucoperiosteum, regardless of the cause and pathogenesis. Otitis media usually develops as a complication of a simple upper respiratory tract infection starting from the nasal cavity. It causes settlement of inflammation via eustachian tube in the mucous membrane of the middle ear cavity. Since almost all of the cases of otitis media (OM) are seen in children, OM is one of the main topics of pediatric otorhinolaryngology. Otitis media is the most frequently seen bacterial infection in children. Although spontaneous recovery is possible, it causes a global health problem because of the potentially serious complications. In this section, we aimed to describe principles of identification, classification and treatment approaches of the otitis media.
