Abstract

Enhanced recovery is a multimodal programme of interdisciplinary care designed to minimize postoperative metabolic response and return the organ functions to normality as soon as possible. This new concept composes of a lot of different interventions, is initially thought to be a radical move away from tradition and dogma to a fundamental change in the perioperative management of patients. The main philosophy of the ERAS protocol is to reduce the metabolic stress caused by surgical trauma and at the same time support the gastrointestinal functions without complication. The ERAS protocols are aimed to address these issues and the interventions that facilitate early recovery cover all phases of the perioperative period during the patients’ journey. The purpose of this report is to give an idea about ERAS by looking to its history in the world and Turkey.
