Adult Intellectual Disability and Psychiatry: Current Situation in Turkey and the World

Özet

Zihinsel yetersizlik (ZY) / Zihinsel gelişim bozukluğu (ZGB) toplumun ortalama %1’ini etkileyen nörogelişimsel ve yaşam boyu süren bir bozukluktur. Araştırmalar psikiyatrik bozuklukların bu grupta en az genel popülasyondaki kadar görüldüğünü ortaya koy-maktadır. Tıbbin ilerlemesi ile yaşam beklentisinin artması erişin psikiyatristlerinin bu hasta grubu ile daha çok karşılaşmalarına yol açmaktadır. Zihinsel yetersizliği/ zihinsel gelişim bozukluğu olan bireylerin bilişsel ve iletişim problemleri, erişkin psikiyatristleri-nin gelişimsel psikopatolojide yeterli deneyimlerinin olmaması gibi birçok etken, bu grupta psikiyatrik değerlendirme yapmayı güçleştirmektedir. Bu gözden geçirme yazı-sının amacı ZY/ZGB’ye güncel literatür ışığında genel bir bakış sunmak ve erişkin psiki-yatristlerine bu özel hasta grubu ile ilgili birtakım pratik ipuçları vermektir.

Abstract

Intellectual Disability (ID)/ Intellectual Developmental Disorder (IDD) is a lifelong neu-rodevelopmental disorder which effects approximately 1% of the population. Studies reveal that psychiatric disorders are seen at least as often as in general population. Medical advances have resulted in increased life expectancy of people which led adult psychiatrists to encounter this group of patients more frequently. Various factors such as cognitive and communication problems of the individuals with ID/IDD and general psychiatrists’ inadequate experience in developmental psychopathology make the psychiatric assessment difficult to perform. The aim of this review is to present a gen-eral overview of ID/IDD under the light of current literature, and provide adult psy-chiatrists with some practical tips about this special group of patients.
