Abstract

The material of narration that is called now Isrâiliyyât , i.e., literature of the Biblical tales, has been from the early years of Islam onward used frequently and widely in a particular connection with the interpretation of the Qur anic stories. Yet with Ibn Taymiyya s and his pupil Ibn Kathîr s notes of objection to the usage of the Biblical tales, the exegetical authors started to keep a distance from such tales. In the meantime, Fakhr al- Dîn al-Râzî got engaged in the discussion of the innocence of the proph- ets which made the use of the Biblical tales especially in interpreting the Qur anic stories of the prophets equal to sinning in a respect. As for the modern time, the Biblical tales have been considered a garbage of narra- tions which had been introduced from Judeo-Christian culture into Islam and which have no value at all. Furthermore, as regards the source of the Biblical tales, there have been put forward some theses, sounding like conspiracy theory, by many Muslim scholars such as Rashîd Ridâ, Ahmad Amîn, Mahmûd Abû Rayya, M. Hossein al-Dhahabî, and Ramzî Na nâa.
