Abstract
Taşköprîzâde Ahmet Efendi (1495-1561), who is one of Ottoman philosophers in 17th century, has many works on kalam, Islamic law, logic, biography, history of sciences, Arabic language and literature and medicine. With his work named eş-Şekâikun-numâniyye, which introduces Ottoman scholars, he became popular. He continues the tradition of science classification of Islamic philosophers with his work Miftâhu’s-saâde ve misbâhu’s-siyâde. In this work he shows where the religion and philosophy stand, and gives clues about their relationship with other sciences. The relation between mind and revelation has been a discussion for many centuries. Here mind represents the philosophy and revelation represents the religion, because the source of philosophical sciences is mind, and it’s revelation for religious sciences. Since the sources of religion and philosophy is different even if their goals and subject are the same, many philosopher have been evaluated them with different opinions. The religion – philosophy relations, which had made a significant progress that started with Kindi and had been continued with Ibn Rusd, also handled by Ottoman philosophers, and Taşköprîzâde Ahmed Efendi is one of them. He divides the religious sciences to religious (spiritual) and mental (philosophical) in his work Miftâhu’ssaâde. The philosopher, who splits the sciences according to being theoretical and practical, sees Prophet Idris as the source of philosophical sciences. According to him, Prophet Idris has been granted with the knowledge of astrology besides the spiritual science. In this regard, the religion and philosophy of this prophet has no conflict in each other. In this study Taşköprîzâde’s division of sciences will be observed, his opinions on religion and philosophy will be handled, and his contributions to Ottoman philosophy will be evaluated.
