Abstract
Madhhabs are the social structures that take forms as a result of the institutionalization of particular differentiations in the long run. Though this is mostly a human-centred process, it is also accompanied by many other factors such as religion, policy, culture, economy etc. that work heterarchically. Religious movements should not be taken as a “thing” or “state of things”. On the contrary, they are processes that take shape through the effects of several factors and continue. This fact methodologically requires to take two points into consideration: First, the religious movements are not religiously and culturally isolated realities; and second, they are not productions that come into existence and finalize in the blink of an eye. While the former requires to see the religious movements as a matter of identity, the latter forces us to assess them as ongoing processes. This article aims draw attention to the importance of studying religious movements in the framework of these two points with special reference to certain examples in alShahrastānī’s al-Milal wa al-Nihal.
