Abstract

Thinking, in the philosophical literature, is a concept that finds meaning through human existence. It is accepted that the most important feature that distinguishes a human from another living being is that he/she has the ability to think/contemplate. Human, striving to grasp the essence of existence thanks to this feature, arranges his life in the light of the knowledge obtained through effort; he can even design nature through his abilities. Humans, with a reasoning capacity by nature are given the ability to think; they are described as “the thinking creatures”. In the Qur’an the reasoning capacity of humans is specifically underlined, they are encouraged to contemplate on events and phenomena. It is mentioned that they can only actualize their existential mission by using their mind in a sensible way. Therefore, humans are encouraged to contemplate on their own existence besides thinking about earth, skies and existences beyond them. They are asked to proceed from this level of thinking to the level of attempting to conceive the existence and oneness of Allah. Every single object and being in this world is regarded as something to contemplate on and everything is perceived as an evidence for the existence of God.
