Peygamber’in sîreti eşliğinde kritik edilmiştir.
Abstract
In pre-Islamic Arabic society, it is known that worshipping practices were generally formed around gods and buyūt/houses, particularly around Ka‘bah which has been respected as “House of Allah” as a result of the belief in a superior/supreme being or god. For this reason, it is literally stated in the Quran, which frequently emphasizes the beliefs, worships, customs and traditions of the Arabs in the age of ignorance, that the polytheists of Makkah in times of Prophet Mohammad performed the rituals of “whistling (muka’) and clapping (tasdiyah)”. In this study, whistling and clapping, which are defined as “salāh” in the Quran and mentioned in Islamic literature as a worshipping style peculiar to idolater Arabs, have been comparatively analyzed with the religious rituals appearing as song, music and dance in many religions in terms of form, time and place. Moreover, aforementioned salāh/ritual has been criticized through sīrah, the biography of Mohammad, within the frame of a historico-pragmatic point of view and the conditions forming the base for revelation of the verses of the Quran. It has been concluded that the practices of whistling and clapping associated with the polytheists in a verse in the Quran reading that “Their salāh (prayer) at the house of Allah, was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands.” is not a salāh/ritual peculiar to all idolater Arabs in reality. The phrase in question metaphorically expresses the spiritual deficiency in the form of worshipping and the nullity and meaninglessness of the prayer to Allah by the notables of Quraysh who considered themselves as the family and lovers of God but made war, in Badr, with Prophet Mohammad -discharging his duty to God- and withhold him from Masjid al-Harām.
