Abstract
This study examines how the concept of void/nothingness is analyzed by Al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā in the physical-metaphysical context in terms of addressing to an entity. While this analysis is presented to the reader, the first point to be discussed is the way that the concept of space is shaped in the historical process; then two important figures of our research will be analyzed in terms of how they are understood and transformed in Al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā’s system of thought. Void/nothingness in the discussions of philosophers that turn the concept of void into a matter are reflected as void, nothingness, air, heaven and similar concepts. This concept is explained along with the specific concepts that philosophers are generally associated with when they start doing literary works. These concepts are primarily about space, and the dimension that space is related or motion, time and motion which time is related. Concepts such as direction, atom, matter, finite/limit and infinity/unlimited, which have direct or indirect connection with them, are generally present in the explanation of void. The most important discussion in this regard is based on the existence or inexistence of voids. Philosophers focusing on the atomistic approach who accepted the existence of voids and the debates of the Elea conception, which did not accept the existence of void, laid the foundation for the evolution of the concept of void in the historical process and then moved the idea to the Islamic thought system under the influence of Plato and Aristotle. The void/nothingness in Islamic philosophy which is developed on the basis of the philosophy of Aristotle, finds a place in the discussion field of al-Kindī, is established on a logical place with Al-Fārābī. The greatest contribution is surely made by Ibn Sīnā.
