Abstract

Human beings are such entities that can control their own mental processes and emotional circumstances so that they can improve their self-management. As a natural consequence of their nature, they can develop from mental and moral perspectives and can reach an autonomous competence. By means of this competence, human beings have the opportunity to reach a level in which they are able to be satisfied from their deeds and reach happiness. In order to point this level that a man can reach, many depictions of human have been made in our tradition of thought. Ibn Bajja’s “solitary man” is also one of the original examples of these depictions. In his book Tedbîru’l-Mütevahhid, Ibn Bajjah gave some suggestions for the ones who live in an immoral society and want to protect their mental and spiritual health. These suggestions are; the mental isolation of the solitary man from negative aspects of the society, to give priority to the men of wisdom in their social relations and to develop their philosophical thinking skills in the light of theoretical knowledge and sciences. From these suggestions, in this article we will give point particularly to the thinking skills and philosophical inquiry. Because these suggestions are also in Religious Education’s field of interest which aims the students to gain the ability of autonomous thinking. In this context, within the scope of this article, it is discussed whether Philosophy for Children can support students’ autonomous competence and analyzed the possibility of applying this approach to the field of Religious Education.
