Abstract
The turmoil and anarchy that followed feudality of small political units -after the Roman Empire- could not resist invasion of Europe; it had terminated trade, abolished market, limited agriculture to areas where security was provided, and halted the growth of Europe. Although relatively economic, political, social, technological and scientific developments emerged as compared to the tenth century, Europe of the Middle Ages was lagging in all respects. The eastern civilizations of the Middle Ages are relatively stable political systems; they were ahead of western civilizations in all respects, had large states, large markets, and had steady development in trade and agriculture. Thinkers in western societies of the Middle Ages adopted the doctrine of the Scolicist philosophy, a product and tradition of Christianity and Aristotle thought and this teaching coincided with tradition of medieval Western societies and suppressed capitalist formation and capitalist thought in the Middle Ages. Economic applications and thought in the eastern civilizations of the Middle Ages the ideas had adopted the doctrine of Islam and customary law. Although the Islamic religion and Turkish tradition were not in line with the capitalist mentality, they embraced private property, economic freedom, trade and a controlled market economy in line with its tradition. In this study, the differences in economic practices, economic value judgments and economic thoughts of western and eastern societies living in the same period will be explained.
