Muhammed ve Kur’an algısını ele almaktadır.
Abstract
The beginning of Muslim-Christian relations goes back to the period of Muhammad. These relations, which initially started in a friendly atmosphere, have gradually left a hostile attitude. Christians depicted Muslims first as a “pagan” and then “a heretic religious group”. Peter of Cluny, on the one hand, opposed the killing of Muslims by war during the Crusader Wars; on the other hand, he advocated their conversion to Christianity by fighting them intellectually. In this sense, he pioneered the translation of a series of Works related to the religion of Islam -known as the Toledo Collection – from Greek to Latin, especially the Qur'an. Thanks to these translations, on the one hand he wanted Muslims to convert to Christianity, on the other hand, he wanted Christians inclined to the religion of Islam to abandon their intentions. He created his own perception of Islam by using both these translations and the Dialogue of Petrus Alfonsi and the Chronicle of Theophanes whose manuscripts belong to Anastasius. As a result of this perception, he presented the religion of Islam as “a Christian heresy”; Muslims as “Saracaens”; Muhammad as “a falseprophet”; also the Quran as “a product of falsification”. After an introduction to the brief history of Muslim-Christian relations, this article discusses the life, works and intellectual background of the Peter of Cluny, his view of the religion of Islam and Muslims, as well as his perception of Muhammad and the Quran. The obtained information and inferences are presented as a summary in the conclusion section.
