Abstract

Woman generally, though not always, played a prominent role in education throughout Islamic history. Especially during the 7-10/13-15th centuries, women were important in the education sector in the Mamluk region. For instance, al- Câmi' al-Muzaffarî, which was built by the Makdisi family, which migrated from al-Quds and settled in Damascus, was a significant place for public courses taught by many eminent scholars. Female hadith scholars (mugaddithât) took part in teaching alongside their male colleagues. In this article, I aim to expound upon the educational activities of these female scholars, using samâ' registrations as a primary source. These educational activities were pursued not only in their houses but also in educational institutions such as dâr al-gadiths, madrasas and even mosques. In this article, I have introduced female hadith scholars who lived during the Mamluk period. Additionally, by means of samâ' registrations, I briefly touch upon the books, the students' ages, their number and level of knowledge. Finally, I have presented information about the reading culture of the period and the importance of education in the society.
