Abstract
Social media, which emerged as a result of the developments in communication technologies, not only removed the time and space boundaries between people, but also caused significant changes in social values. One of these values is privacy. Individuals' perception of privacy has also changed with social media. Individuals reveal their private lives with their posts on social media, and the perception of privacy becomes less important with this disclosure. This study was carried out to measure the privacy perceptions of young people who use social media extensively. The sample of the study consisted of 269 students studying at Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University Faculty of Communication. The data obtained in the study were collected by questionnaire technique, which is one of the quantitative research methods. According to the data obtained from the research, most of the students regularly spend a certain amount of time on social media every day. Young people mostly use social media to communicate with their friends and well-known people. Another finding obtained as a result of the research is that the vast majority of young people experience privacy concerns while sharing on social media. On the other hand, when looking at the content that young people say never to share on social media, it was determined that the phone number came first, followed by income and private life. The items such as where I live and relationship status in the options presented to the participants come after these. This means that today, young people perceive privacy as a phone number, income status and private life, regard information as more private by many people, and information about relationship status and living spaces as less private. Again, it was determined that the gender and privacy perceptions of the participants, their frequency of use of social media and their purpose of using social media differ significantly. As a result of the research, it can be said that the privacy perception of today's young people has changed at a certain level in parallel with the use of social media.
