Abstract

Today, Instagram has a vital place in modern people’s lives. For modern people who takes tens of photographs of the places they visit, the food they eat, the gifts they buy and even the inside their houses every day and shares these photographs on their Instagram profiles so that other people can see, creating content for Instagram is an occupation with office hours almost like a real job. The existence of a financial income that can be obtained by reaching high audience numbers of posts posted on Instagram also causes people to spend overtime to produce Instagram content. The studies show that the majority of Instagram users enjoy sharing the life they want to live with other people instead of the life they live in. Instagram provides a relative area of freedom to individuals where they can transform into individuals, they want to be rather than who they are. However, during this transformation, individuals sometimes consciously or unconsciously apply symbolic violence to attract the attention of other individuals. With both the desire to reach more people and to be seen by more people and financial concerns, the modern people who are Instagram users can sometimes cross their borders and harm even those they do not know at all. In this study, 2 of the symbolic violence examples on individuals in 65 years old or higher age group who are included in the heavy risk group during the global COVID-19 pandemic with Van Dijk discourse analysis method and the attempt is made to explain the main reason for behaviors of the Instagram user individuals. During this study, the fluid, fast and dynamic structure of Instagram sometimes challenges recording the analyzed content and analyzing the original forms of the examples. The main reason for this is that the content uploaded on Instagram can be deleted in a short time (the contents analyzed as examples were deleted with legal procedures) and it might be challenging to reach the original source since a shared post is re-shared by thousands of people.
