Abstract
Catheter related infections are important sources of fungal nosocomial problems. Candida species are the most common isolates of these infections. The slime production is essential for the adherence and colonization of the yeast which lead to infection. The production of slime was investigated by using a modified tube adherence test among 63 Candida albicans isolates in order to find out the role of slime in C. albicans infections. One (1.6%) of the isolates produced slime strongly positive while six (9.5 %) of them were weakly positive. This result suggests that the ability of slime production may play a role in the catheter related C. albicans infections by causing the adherence of the microorganism to plastic catheters; however it seems that other virulance factors are more important for the pathogenicity of C. albicans.
