Örneklerin 41 'inde (%6.0) Shigella spp., yedisinde (%1.0) Salmonella spp. izole edildi.

Abstract

Recently, the infections caused by Escherichia coli O157 have become an important public health problem in many countries especially in North America and Europe. Although the number of infections are small when compared with other enteric pathogens, E. coli O157 has the potential to produce quite serious and life-threatening disease. This study aimed at determining the prevalance of E. coli O157 in cases of gastroenteritis. Stool samples from 681 patients with gastroenteritis were investigated for E. coli O157. The specimens were inoculated on sorbitol Mac Conkey agar and incubated for 24-48 hours at 37ºC. At the end of the incubation, the presence of E. coli O157 was investigated in sorbitol-negative colonies by latex agglutination. One E. coli O157 (0.1%), 41 (6.0%) Shigella spp. and seven (1.0%) Salmonella spp. were isolated out of 681 specimens.
