Abstract
In order to evaluate the antibiotic usage in the community, a questionnaire was given to 432 persons between 1 May 1997 and 1 June 1997. The use or not use of antibiotics in the preceding month, the indication for use, the person who suggested it, the route of antibiotic, administration, and the name of the antibiotic were recorded. Antibiotic usage was found in % 27.5 of the persons who answered. The main indication was symptoms of the respiratory tract infections while penicilline and derivatives were the most frequently used antibiotics. The antibiotic usage was suggested by a physician in % 73.1 of the cases, however, in only %52.8 of them laboratory examinations had been carried out. In conclusion, although antibiotic usage in the community is mostly suggested by a physician, the physical examination by the physician is to be supported by laboratory examinations and a continuous educational programme on antibiotic usage should be a necessity for physicians and community.
