Abstract
The aim of this paper was to determine the agents of bacterical meningitis in the October 1996-October 1998 period. The cerebrospinal fluid samples collected from 386 patients suspected having meningitis were bacteriologically investigated. Out of these 386 samples, 327 (84.7%) were negative for bacteria, whereas in 59 (15.3%) bacteria were determined. The isolated bacteria were identified as follows: Coagulase-positive staphylococci 10 (16.9%), coagulase-negative staphylococci eight (13.6%), Streptococcus pneumoniae eight'(13.6%), Neisseria meningitidis seven (11.9%), Escherichia coli six (10.2%), Acinetobacter spp. five (8.5%), Pseudomonas spp. four (6.8%), Klebsiella pneumoniae three (5.1 %), Haemophilus influenzae type b three (5.1 %), Enterobacter spp. three (5.1 %), Enterococcus one (1.7%) and non-Enterococcus one (1.7%). Furthermore, the relation between isolated bacteria and seasons, sex of the patients and the hospital departments was also studied.
