Abstract

In order to determine the prevalence and causative agents of tinea capitis in primary school children in Mersin city center, a prospective study was made from November 1998 to February 1999. A total of 24812 children, 8665 (34.9 %) from urban and 16147 (65.1 %) from suburban areas - in 24 schools - were screened. The infection rate in these schools ranged from 0 to 0.3 % with a mean of 0.03%. Eight children (age range: 7-12 years), six boys and two girls, were found to be infected on mycological examination. All of these cases were from the suburban areas and Tinea capitis superficialis was detected in all of them. Trichophyton violaceum was the most frequently isolated species (62.5 %), followed by T. mentagrophytes (37.5 %). In conclusion, an increased incidence of T. violaceum infections -as a causative agent of Tinea capitis - would be expected in other parts of Turkey especially in areas with adjoining cities, and cities with a high level of immigrants from the South-East Anatolian Region.
