Abstract
It is shown that prophylactic antibiotic usage is beneficial in preventing postoperative infections. This study was planned to determine appropriateness of prophylactic antibiotic therapy in surgery in Celal Bayar University Hospital. The prophylactic antibiotic usage of the patients (n=109) who were operated between the months of October and December 1998 were investigated by using the criteria of Surgical Infection Society. It was found that the use of antibiotics in 10.1% of the operations was appropriate, in 42.2% inappropriate and in 47.7% unnecessary. The appropriate antibiotic usage for the dose, the beginning time and the treatment period were 83.5%, 35.8%, and 11.0%, respectively. Of the operations 39.4% was in clean category while 60.6% in clean contaminated and contaminated category. It was found that in the clean operations the rate of using inappropriate antibiotics was 67.4%, in the clean-contaminated and contaminated operations the rate was 25.8% (p
