Abstract

Helicobacter pylori, the organism associated with peptic ulceration, is responsible for the pathogenesis of Parkinson's Disease. This cross-sectional case control study was planned to investigate the frequency of subclinical H. pylori seropositivity in patients with Parkinson's Disease. Nineteen selected patients with Parkinson's Disease, using levodopa, who had not had gastric complaints or previous peptic ulcus diagnosis and age matched 21 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Specific IgM and IgG antibodies for H. pylori were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The majority of the patients (12 patients - 63.2%) had advanced (severe) stage of Parkinson's Disease. Three patients in Parkinson's Disease group and five subjects in the control group had IgG seropositivity for H. pylori. There was no significant difference between the groups in respect to IgG seropositivity (p>0.05). Only three patients had IgM seropositivity for H. pylori although none of the control group had IgM seropositivity.
