Abstract
Gastroenteritis is a major cause of illness in young children worldwide. In this study, pathogens responsible for acute diarrhea in children under 5 years of age, admitted to Perilikaya Health Center in Gaziantep through June-July 2000, were evaluated with the aim of determining enteric pathogens in childhood in the area. Ninetyone stool specimens from infants and children suffering from acute gastroenteritis and 60 from asymptomatic children within the same age group were searched for intestinal pathogens. Regarding the study group, protozoa were observed in 27 (29.7%) of cases being Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia intestinalis the mostly seen species. Rotavirus was detected in 25 (27.5%) of children whereas Candida species in 24 (26.4%) cases. Pathogenic bacteria were isolated only in five (5.5%) of the specimens; two (2.2%) of the isolates were Salmonella species and three (3.3%) Shigella species. Among the asymptomatic group protozoa and Candida species were determined in five (8.3%) and four (6.7%) cases, respectively. No bacterial pathogen was isolated in healthy children.
