Abstract

Making a rapid progress from the early 2000’s, Web 2.0 technologies have brought the use of Internet in the political campaign processes as a medium. When social network sites are introduced into human life, they have inevitably brought a new dimension to political communication. Politicians, political institutions, and voters effectively use especially Twitter, in the communication they establish with other actors of democracy. This study statistically examines the tweets that supported votes yes and no during the political campaign for April 16, 2017 Constitutional Amendment plebiscite. First, descriptive statistics about Twitter usage during the campaign period were compiled. In this context, we presented the statistics about the increasing and decreasing tendencies of Twitter usage and retweeting and mentioning mechanisms. According to this, media organizations, journalists and other civic profiles became active in the campaign for the vote No, while the most mentioned users of Twitter in the campaign for the vote Yes were mostly politicians and other political actors. Findings from the study are expected to provide data for the future studies on the April, 16 plebiscite and social media use.
