Economic changes in the Cukurova region during the process of capitalization in the nineteenth century

Özet

19. yüzyılda sürekli değişen siyasal politikaların ekonomik yansımaları, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda birçok değişimi beraberinde getirmiştir. Bu süreçte imzalanan Balta Limanı Antlaşması, Osmanlı iktisadi tarihi açısından bir dönüm noktasıdır. Bu antlaşma ile Osmanlı ticaret sisteminde büyük bir dönüşüm yaşanmış ve özellikle ticari potansiyeli yüksek taşra kentlerinde oldukça önemli izler bırakmıştır. Bu makale ile Tarsus’un bu süreçteki büyük ticari değişiminin Çukurova Bölgesi’nde yarattığı etkiler üzerinde durulmaktadır.

Abstract

In the 19th century, the economic repercussions of constantly changing policies paved the road for a number changes in the Ottoman Empire. The Balta Limanı Treaty signed in this century became a turning point for Ottoman economic history. As a result of this treaty, particularly in the provincial cities with high potential of trade, a great transformation occurred in the Ottoman trade system. This article examines the transformation of trade in Tarsus and the effect of this economic transformation on the region of Çukurova.
