Abstract
The main aim of this study was to examine perceptions of English travellers who visited theOttoman lands in the 19th century about the health conditions in the country. The issue of thehealth conditions of the Ottoman society is one of the points certainly mentioned in the works ofthe travellers. In this sense, the travellers focused on issues such as epidemics, health status of thecommunity, and the influence of physical conditions of the cities on the public health. The travellers mentioned that the Ottoman society was generally healthy. However, it was alsoemphasised that epidemics such as plague and typhoid were considerably common in Anatoliaand Istanbul in the 19th century. According to the travellers, that streets were “narrow and dirty”throughout the country paved a convenient way for epidemics. In the travel books, it was statedthat the disease was not taken seriously until number of deaths on a daily basis reached aparticular number during the epidemics in Turkey. For the reason that people still contacted witheach other, the epidemic spread more rapidly. Travellers reported that fatalist understanding in thesociety is one of the major obstacles in diagnosis and treatment of diseases in an early period. In the 19th century, it was reported that rachitism was widely seen in children and eye diseases andhernia were often detected in adults in addition to epidemics throughout the country. According totravellers, elders also complained of lungs, post-nasal drainage, and asthma. Another issue thatthat travellers criticized was medical education in the Ottoman country. They considered themedical knowledge and education of doctors inadequate and also criticised that people went tofolk healer. Although they criticized some attitudes of people related to health issue, they spokehighly of the hygiene habit of the society.
