Abstract
Gunpowder-firearms technology, compass, paper and printing press are regarded as the four great inventions that left their mark on the period between 1450 and 1750, which is called as the early modern era. The use of gunpowder in firearms led to the demise of Feudalism in Europe and establishment of nation states. The compass, on the other hand, opened the door to geographical discoveries thereby leading to discovery of new worlds. The paper-printing press, too, gave rise to a huge change in the history of mankind by making access to information easy and cheap. The use by the Muslim subjects of the Ottoman State of the printing press, which was invented at beginning of the early morning period, corresponds to the end of the said period. Topics such as the reason behind this delay, whether the printing press introduced by Ibrahim Muteferrika was a success or not and if it was, to what extent it was successful still maintain their relevance as points of serious discussion. This study aims to find answers to questions such as to what extent Muteferrika’s printing press was successful and how much it reduced book costs. To this end, it is suggested that a comparison be made between handwritten books and printed books. The fall in the book costs caused by the printing press can be revealed by comparing the cost of the printed book with its possible cost if it were to be written by hand. In order tor ender the obtained result more significant, an evaluation was made by dividing the costs of handwritten books and printed books used in the comparison by daily wages of an unskilled worker, a skilled worker and a professor, thereby obtaining the costs of the books in terms of labor.
