Abstract

Niš Castle was heavily damaged during the long war between 1683-1699 and most of it was destroyed. In the years that followed the Treaty of Karlowitz, the castle’s reperation was planned but postponed several times. Finally, in 1716, while the preparations for the Austrian Campaign were underway, the repairment was started due to the strategic situation of the castle. For this task, Bostancıbashi Halil Pasha was commissioned and immediately he made the reconnaissance of the castle and he started to work on necessary labour force and supplies. However, after a while, Halil Pasha was appointed as the Belgrade guard so that some delays occurred in the repairment. Abdurrahman Aga, who was appointed later, completed this work until the spring of 1717. On the other hand, the Vidin-Niš road was used as an alternative route during the Austrian war of 1716 due to the vorticity of the Danube River which blockade the voyage. This route has been greatly benefited during the voyage. In addition, Niš as the army gathering center on the Middle Arm (Orta Kol), served as a logistic base for the shipment of the needed ammunition and service to the battle ground. These deliveries were carried out not only from Niš, but from Edirne to many different places. In the first phase of the 1716-1718 Austrian Campaign, the construction of the Niš castle, its strategic and logistical importance, the maintenance of the road between Vidin-Niš and the shipment from here were evaluated.
