Abstract
It is possible to lead the modernization of Turkish women to the Tanzimat period, when the first Westernization attempts in the Ottoman Empire began. In later periods, “the issue of women” and “women” came to the agenda. This issue, which found its place especially in the press, continued to be discussed in the first years of the Republic. Thus, the efforts of “How should be the Turkish women” since the period of the İttihat ve Terakki, continued in the Republican period, too. Forty-seven journals published in the early Republican period were included in the study and the topic of women, which was heavily processed in journals, was used as the main material of the article. The image of women in the journals is examined and the common and different opinions about women are tried to be evaluated. In the journals reviewed, generally, it was determined that the ideal woman and modern women emphasized. In addition, it was found that almost all of the journals described the ideal Turkish woman as an educated mother and wife.
