Abstract
One of the main reasons of the rise of Romewhich was a relatively ordinary city-state at thebeginning, to capture and rule over the largeterritories in the Mediterranean basin, was itsstrong armed forces. There were many factorsfor keeping Roman army strong in both peaceand war times. The talent of command echelon, tactics, ability to keep up with the moderndevelopments and their arms and equipmentwere among the most important reasons for anarmy to stay strong. On the other hand, one ofthe main reasons of any armed forces to besuccessful, is the quality of its soldiers in ancientages as well as in the modern days. The Romanarmy was a militia force which was formed whenthe need arises until the late Republic period, with the reforms of Marius, it became aprofessional force. In the I and IIth centuriesA.D. when the Pax Romana, the Romans did nothave any difficulty to find new recruits and couldmaintain its strength. However, the highstandards for recruitment had to be abandonedbecause of the increasingly frequent militaryconflicts in the IIIrd century A.D. and the Romanarmy began to weaken which was one of reasonsof the fall of Roman Empire.
