Özet

Bu araştırmanın temel amacı Kıbrıs’ın Türkiye için millî birdava haline dönüşmesinde, Sedat Simavi’nin rolünüirdelemektir. Türk basın tarihinin önde gelen isimlerindenSedat Simavi 1 Mayıs 1948’de Hürriyet gazetesini kurup,vefat ettiği 11 Aralık 1953’e kadar Kıbrıs Adası ile yakındanilgilenmiş, Ada’nın Türkiye’ye ait olduğunu iddia etmiştir.Oysa o yıllarda Türk Dışişleri Kıbrıs konusunda çeşitlisebeplerden dolayı sessizdir. Dönemin Dışişleri Bakanlarıhem Necmettin Sadak hem Fuad Köprülü aynı şekilde; “Türkiye’nin Kıbrıs diye bir meselesi yoktur” açıklamasınıyapmışlardır. Fakat Türk kamuoyu, resmi organlar gibiKıbrıs konusunda sessiz kalmamış, giderek artan bir şekildeKıbrıs’ın Türk olduğunu savunmuştur. İşte bu durumun enönde gelen ismi Hürriyet Gazetesi aracılığı ile Sedat Simaviolmuştur. Vefatından birkaç ay önce Kıbrıs ile ilgili yazılarınedeniyle dönemin Dışişleri Bakanı Fuad Köprülü ilemahkemelik olmuştur. Mahkeme sürecinde hasta olanSimavi’nin hastalığı iyice ilerlemiş ve mahkeme sürecindevefat etmiştir. Kıbrıs meselesini hem oğullarına hem deHürriyet gazetesine vasiyet olarak bırakmıştır. SonuçtaSimavi Türkler için Kıbrıs’ın millî bir dava olmasındasembol isimlerden biri olmuştur.

Abstract

The main objective of this research in Cyprus forTurkey's transformation into a national case, toexamine the role Sedat Simavi. Turkish presshistory of the leading names Sedat Simavi, set upthe Hurriyet newspaper on May 1, 1948, until hedied on December 11, 1953 has been closelyinvolved with the island of Cyprus, the island wasclaimed that belong to Turkey. However, in thoseyears, Turkish Foreign Affairs was silent on theCyprus issue for various reasons. The ForeignMinisters of the period were both Necmettin Sadakand Fuad Köprülü in the same way; "Turkey'sCyprus there is no issue" they explained. However,Turkish public opinion did not remain silent aboutCyprus like official bodies, and increasinglydefended that Cyprus is Turkish. Sedat Simavi,through the Hürriyet Newspaper, was the foremostname in this situation. A few months before hisdeath, he was on trial with the then Minister ofForeign Affairs, Fuad Köprülü, due to his writingson Cyprus. The illness of Simavi, who was sickduring the court process, progressed and passedaway during the court process. He left the Cyprusissue as a testament to both his sons and theHürriyet newspaper. As a result, Simavi has beenone of the symbolic names in making Cyprus anational cause for the Turks.
