Abstract

With the invasion policies of the colonial statestowards Muslim sultanates in South and SoutheastAsia, the relationship between the Ottoman Empireand local sultanates in the region was peaked from the last quarter of the nineteenth century to the first yearsof the twentieth century. Of course, the main factor inthe formation of these intense relations was the policyof Pan-Islamism because the Ottoman Empire gavemore importance to these lands, which it saw as oneof the application areas of the Pan-Islamism policyagainst the occupying states. In such a period, theemergence of a man named Colonel Dr. AbdullahYusuf, who introduced himself as a spy of SultanAbdul Hamid II, and his activities in the region onbehalf of the Ottoman Empire, caused a diplomaticcrisis between the Ottoman Empire and the colonialstates in the Malay World. In the end of his activitiesin Indonesia, caused to rise the tension between theOttoman Sultan and the Queen of the Netherlands. Itis understood that before he came to Indonesia, he wasbeing investigated by both colonial states andOttoman consuls due to his swindle activities in India,Sri Lanka, Japan and Singapore, but he could not bearrested. After his long escape route, this person, whowas finally seen on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, got involved in big business, even affected the courseof the war between the Jambi Sultanate and the Dutchmilitary units in the region. The main purpose of thisstudy is to seek an answer to the question of whetherthis person was indeed an Ottoman spy or an Imposter.
