Abstract
Aim: This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to determine the professional values of nurse academics working at a nursing faculty. Methods: Of the 120 total number of nurse academics attempted to be reached, 89 (Participation rate=74.2%) participated in the study, which was conducted at a faculty of nursing in the western region of Turkey between January and February 2016. After ethics committee approval and written consent from the participants were obtained, the data in the study were collected using the Personal Information Form and the Revised Nursing Professional Values Scale (NPVS-R). The lowest possible score obtainable from the scale is 26 and the highest possible score is 130. The fact that an individual obtains a high score on the scale indicates that this individual has strong professional values. The research data were analyzed with the SPSS 16.0 program. Kolmogorov- Smirnov analysis, independent t test, and one-way ANOVA were used for data analysis. Results: The average age of the nurse academics was 35.52±9.60 years, they worked for 13.38±10.65 years on average, 55.0% of them had a doctoral degree, and 85.4% gave information about the professional values to students. The mean total item score of the NPVS-R was 109.87±1.37 and the mean total item scores of Revised Nursing Proffessional Values Scale was 4.22±0.50. Academic nurses in the age group of 36-45 who gave information about the professional values to their students were found to have higher scores in the Revised Nursing Proffessional Values Scale (p0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that academics had strong professional values. It was found that the age of the academics and whether or not they gave information about the professional values to their students make a significant difference in the perception of professional values.
