Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the effects of egg weight on hatchability, fattening performance and egg yield traits of japanase quail. 1210 eggs of Japanase quail (Coturnix coturnix japonicd) were collected daily and grouped according to their weight as follows : 9.00-9.99, 10.00-10.99,11.00-11.99, 12.00-12.99 and>13 g and stored for up to 9 days. For the 5 egg-weight groups, respectively, fertilities were 75.9, 79.3, 78.6, 78.0 and 80.0%, hatchabilities of eggs set were 50.0, 57.3, 57.6, 55.3 and 56.4%, hatchabilities of fertile eggs were 65.9, 72.3, 7~3.3, 70.9 and 69.3%, and embryo mortalities were 38.7, 22.0, 21.0, 29.0 and 30,7%. Egg weight was positively correlated (r=0.993) with hatching weight but the correlation coeficient of egg weight to chick weight decreased with increasing age of the chick. Four groups (10.00-10.99, 11.00-11.99, 12.00-12.99 and >13 g) were used to determine fattening performance and egg yield traits. Body weights and feed consumption were measured weekly to 6 wk of age for quail chicks which hatched from 4 egg weight classes. In the 4 groups respectively, day-old chick weights averaged 7.1, 7.8, 8.5 and 9.3 g, body weight (BW) at 6 weeks 173.7, 175.6, 190.5 and 196.3 g, cumulative feed consumption (FC) 634.2, 656.1, 672.0 and 729.9 g, and cumulative feed conversion ratio (FCR) (g food/g gain) 3.66, 3.73, 3.54 and 3.72. Mortality to 6 wk was 22.7, 16.6, 17.6 and 10.8 % respectively, in the four groups. The differences between day-old chick weight, BW, FC, FCR and mortality were significant (p13 g) were significantly heavier (196.3, 173.7) and greater livability (89.19, 77.26) through 6 wk of age than quail hatched from small eggs (10.00-10.99). The percentages of body weight gain at 6 wk of age were lower (male 78%, female 58%) than those at 5 wk of age and also feed conversion ratio were 27% higher than those at 5 wk of age. Therefore, 5 wk of age can be suggested for slaughtering age. There were significant differences (p
