Abstract

Objective: Preeclampsia has a high risk of mortality and morbidity. In this study we aimed to evaluate the hematologic changes associated with preeclampsia among full-term and preterm newborns. Methods: The study was performed in Zeynep Kamil Maternity and Children's Education and Research Hospital between January 2000-December 2001. This retrospective study was conducted among 234 babies. One hundred and nineteen of them were the babies of mothers with pregnancy-induced hypertension. Venous blood samples were taken from all the babies in the 6th-12th hours of their life to evaluate hematocrit, neutrophil and thrombocyte values. We compared the results of hypertensive(group I) and healthy(group II) mothers' babies. Results: The results of the hypertensive mothers' babies were as follows; neutropenia 37%, thrombocytopenia 14%, polycythemia 12%. Comparing the neutropenia there was no significant difference between the groups in term babies. Among preterm babies, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia were morely detected in group l(p
