Abstract

In this study, 50 patients with salivary gland tumors were reviwed for their clinical presentations, age and sex distributions, diagnostic evaluation, pathological diagnosis and treatment modalities between 2001 -2004. An asymptomatic mass was the most common clinical presentation. Total or superficial parotidectomy was used for the treatment of parotid lesions. Postoperative radiotherapy was applied to high grade tumors. Tumors were classified according to their histopathological diagnosis. 90% of parotid tumors were benign and 10% were malignant. However, 50% of sub-mandibular gland tumors were benign and rest of the tumors were malignant. Among the tumors of both parotid gland and submandibular gland, pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumor. Adenocarcinoma and indiffe-rentiated solid carcinoma were equal in number in parotid malignancies. But in submandibular gland, adenocystic carcinoma was the only tumor observed. The results were compared with the findings of many other studies.
