Abstract
eadache associated with both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism has been reported in the literature. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of thyroid disease in patients with a diagnosis of migraine. This study population included 80 consecutive migraine patients (5 male, 75 female) from Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital, 2nd Department of Neurology, Headache Outpatient Clinic. Serum free triio-dothyronine, free tiroksin and thyroid stimulating hormone levels were measured. Overall 16% of the patients had abnormal thyroid function tests; hypothyroidism was found in 6 and hyperthyroidism was found in 7 patients. Although thyroid hormone levels are not routinely studied during the evaluation of chronic headache patients, it should be studied in ambiguous patients.
