Abstract
The ages between 12-18 is the period in which addictive substances are first used all over the world. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of substance use and associated factors among the students of primary schools and high school students in Diyarbakır. 3000 students representing all the students were taken within the scope of the study. Of the 62% students we- re males, and 38% were females. The mean age was 15.2+2.0 (11-20). Th§ prevalence of alcohol use was found to be 6.0% in total. The average age for first time alcohol use among students was found to be 13.3+3.0. The percentage of the students who had tried one of the drugs at last once was determined as 2.5 % (3.5% in males and 0.8% in females). Male gender, age, substance use by family members and close friends and informing students about alcohol and drugs were the most significant risk factors affecting substance use. Interventions which will be implemented in this context should not only comprise the young, but also the all society. Families, teachers and primary school students are the groups which are of priority for intervention.
