Abstract

Lymph node metastasis is the leading prognostic factor to decide adjuvant therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk factors of lymph nodemetastasis in patients with colorectal carcinomas. Methods: A review was performed of 85 patients who underwent curative resection for colorectal carcinoma between June 2005 and May 2008. The following clinic and pathologic variables were evaluated: sex, age, location and size of the tumor, lymphovascular invasion, histologic grade, lymphocytic invasion, perineural invasion, and number of the dissected lymph nodes. Results: The overall lymph node metastases were present in 34 (40%) of patients. The presence of lymphovascular and perineural invasion and also size of the tumor were the significant risk factors for lymph node metastasis. Conclusion: Lymphovascular and perineural invasion and the size of the tumor are the significant risk factors for lymph node metastasis in colorectal carcinoma.
