A Study on the Lexicological Corpus of TÜRKÇE SÖZLÜK, a Monolanguage Dictionary Published in 1945

Abstract

Is Turkish language in danger? Foreign words in Turkish have always been a hotly debated issue in Turkey. This article analyses the influence of foreign words on Turkish language. For this purpose, a loan word corpus has been compiled by consulting the TÜRKÇE SÖZLÜK (Turkish Dictionary) which was the first of its kind when published in 1945 by Turkish Language Institute. This lexicographical analysis of Turkish vocabulary aims to determine the range and extent of borrowings, the source languages, the periods and the fields of borrowings, and the cultural influences that underlie the borrowings.
