Abstract

Conditional clauses and wh-phrases are among the most frequently studied linguistic structures. They have been studied in terms of distinct linguistic aspects. The reason for this attention seems to be the complex syntactic patterns they have. This study deals with and analyses conditional questions in which wh-phrases appear in protasis or antecedent of conditional clauses. The aim of the study is to uncover syntactic characteristics of conditional questions, part of conditional clauses in Turkish. These syntactic characteristics are revealed through the comparison of plain or other conditional constructions and conditional questions. It is found that conditional questions have distinct syntactic properties that make them different from other conditional constructions. One of these significant differences is that conditional particle eğer which is optionally used in other conditional constructions does not appear in conditional questions. The other difference is that the antecedent-consequent order is the only option in conditional questions although there are two options, namely antecedent- consequent and consequent-antecedent, in other conditional constructions. The study tries to offer explanations about these patterns observed in conditional questions. The unavailability of eğer particle in conditional questions stems from the fact that this particle does not have the feature of [+wh]. Concerning the antecedent-consequent order in conditional questions, it is argued that mental or conceptual model produced in antecedent clause should be uttered first to ask the question in the consequent clause. In short, the question cannot be asked without developing the related conceptual framework in the antecedent clause. Therefore, unlike other conditional clauses and subordinate clauses the order of clauses in conditional questions is very rigid. It is even possible to argue that the antecedent-consequent order is a frozen pattern for conditional questions. The syntactic observations above also provide some characteristics of the conditional conjunction eğer. The analysis first uncovers the scope of eğer that is limited to antecedent clause. When there is another embedded clause within antecedent clause the syntactic features of eğer do not affect those of the constituents appear in this embedded clause. Therefore eğer has a narrow scope. The analysis also reveals the position of wh-words in the antecedent clauses of conditional questions. As in simple sentence structures wh-words may appear both in pre-verbal position and in sentence-initial position when they are used in conditional questions.
