Abstract
Marble templon architrave with the scene of Deesis containing Christ, the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist (Ionannes Prodromos), Archangel Michael and Gabriel was purchased by Uşak Museum and brought from Banaz to the museum. Its findspot is unknown. The scene on the front face of the architrave is found in Deesis iconography from the Middle Byzantine art. It might have been used in a church or chapel in Phrygia. In fact, similar examples in terms of their motif, material-technique and style were excavated most in this region around Temenouthyrai (Uşak) and Akroinos (Afyon) in surveys and excavations or museum records. We see that the scenes or figures that are found in these examples of architraves of Deesis are compatible with the local needs or the personal taste of patrons who aided the construction of the churches. They directly reflect the interrelation between religious groups in the region and the ecclesiastical ideology of the Byzantine capital during the Middle Byzantine period. There are epigrams indicating the grants and donations by bishops and epigrams with didactic and guiding content. Among these is Sebaste (Phrygia) example and it dates back to the first half of the 11th century. Templon architraves from the Middle Byzantine period during the 10th and 11th centuries are related to the example in Uşak in terms of its figure style. Deesis scene is combined with floral, geometrical, abstract motifs with an arcade, monogram or symbolic motifs. Deesis scene and compositions with these motifs in Phrygia and Lycia region Xanthos, have been grouped in the light of a few examples. In this study, the example in Uşak has been introduced and dated
