Abstract

The effect of accelerated aging time on color stability of intrinsically and extrinsically stained porcelain used in metal - ceramic restorations was investigated in this study. Metal ceramic samples were made in disk form that were 15 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick. Four groups were made and each group contained ten samples. Black stain was applied directly to the opaque in the first group (opaque stained group). The second group was made with the black stain interposing between 0.5 mm of body porcelain below and 0.5 mm of the same porcelain above (dentin stained group). A layer of black stain was applied over the enamel porcelain and this was the third group (enamel stained group). The fourth group was not stained (nonstained group). Color measurements were made after 300, 600, and 900 hours of accelerated aging time. The CIE - LAB system was used for determining overall color change (AE'ab). Chroma changes (AC'ab) and hue differences (AH'ab) were determined. Kruskal - Wallis Variance Analysis and Friedman Tests were used for statistical comparisons for analyzing AE*ab, AC*ab, and AH*ab. Nonsignificant differences in AE'ab, AC'ab, and AH*ab values for any of the groups were found for different aging times. Color differences were determined according to NBS units for all groups for different aging times. Color diferences (NBS units) that were determined for the groups varied in the acceptable range of 0.17 to 1.66. Aging times have not important effect on color characteristics of intrinsically and extrinsically stained porcelain used in metal - ceramic restorations.
