Abstract

Improvements in adhesion technology have currently focused on simplifying the application of adhesive systems by decreasing the application time and technique sensitivity, and in order to achieve these goals, self-etching adhesives have been developed. Self-etching adhesive systems etch, prime and bond enamel and dentin surfaces simultaneously without the need for rinsing. Although they are marketed as simplified, more complex chemistry is necessary to blend hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers, solvents, water and additives. In addition to this, bonding to dentine has been less reliable due to the characteristics of the dentine substrate, including tubular structure variations, dentine depth, sclerosis, and caries. It is crucial to understand the materials being utilized, the substrate being bonded to, and to perform a correct and precise clinical protocol for proper adhesion to tooth structures and restoration materials . The rapid introduction of new adhesive systems during the last decade, each with its own application techniques, has sometimes made it difficult for clinicians to keep up-to-date with the variations in use. In this paper, self-etching adhesive systems have been discussed from various perspectives, including bonding mechanisms and the morphological varieties of adherent surfaces.
