Abstract
The contamination of food and feed materials with aflatoxins which have toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic activity, causes important health problems and economic losses. Acording to the acute toxicity tests, aflatoxin $M-1(AFM_1)$ as toxic as aflatoxin $B_1(AFB_1)$, whereas its carcinogenicity and mutagenicity is lower than $AFB_1$. As milk and milk products are important sources of nutrients, the contamination of these products with $AFM_1$ is a potential risk for human health. The consumption of milk by especially infants and growing children is quite high, increasing the risk of exposure to $AFM_1$. For this reason, the maximum permissible level of $AFM_1$ in milk and milk products have been regulated in many countries. In this article, the presence of $AFM_1$ in milk and milk products in the world and in our country and the potential of $AFM_1$ risk in milk and milk products produced in our country have been discussed. Besides, the presence of $AFM_1$ in human breast milk, the main nutrient of infants, have been evaluated.
