Abstract

The Köprübaşı uranium deposit is one of the largest uranium deposits in Turkey. The deposit is hosted in Neogene fluvial sediments. The main source for the uranium is uraniferous gneisses that provided sediment for the host sandstone and conglomerate.Gneisses consist mainly of quartz, biotite, muscovite, plagioclase (albite and oligoclase) andK-feldspar (orthoclase, sanidine and microcline) with minor zircon, apatite and turmaline. Geochemical data show that the analysed gneisses are orthogneisses. The orthogneisses have a composition of per aluminous. They originated by metamorphism of granite or granitoid with S-type geochemical affinities. Samples collected to be representative of various kinds of these gneisses in Köprübaşı area, without regard to their radioactivity in the field, ranged from 2.7 ppm to 8.3 ppm. These values show that the Köprübaşı gneisses contain uranium in concentration above the crustal average (2.6 ppm). The high U content of these gneisses are correlated with the granitic protolith of the gneisses and is assumed here to be one of the most important factors providing the formation of uranium deposit in the Köprübaşı area.
