Abstract

Marie de France's Guigemar, Lanval and Yonec have the -otherworldy voyage as a common motif. In these three lais the mysterious merging of .the real world and the otherworld play a significant role in the development of the character who undergoes a voyage in between the two worlds. Through this otherworldly voyage Guigemar learns what love is, Lanval finds more than what he has lost in King Arthur's court, and the "imprisoned lady in Yonec finds love, life and hope with the hawk:knight who comes from another realm. In these lais the otherworld, that has its roots in the Celtic belief and | tradition, is presented as a place where the character can live and experience the thing that he can hardly achieve in the real world. Sometimes it appears as a place for remedy, a place of ultimate joy where die lovers unite, a place of unlimited wealth and also as a place where one's destiny is determined. But still, the values of these worlds are quite different from each other, and a happiness and a fulfilment enjoyed in the otherworld do not promise a full recovery from the frustrations that the characters experience in the real world.
