Abstract
he emergence and development of modern art in America at the turn of the century is largely owed to the impact of French avant-garde painting. This study aims at chronicling the reaction of the public and of the academy to the modern works of art-many of which belonged to French painters-exhibited at Stieglitz' 291 Gallery and at the Armory Show. Next, die study reveals that modern art did not only find support by the avant-garde art circles, but also by literary figures, a good example of which is George Cram Cook's one-act play, Change Your Style (1915) which was staged by Provincetown players the year it was written.
