Abstract

The poetry of Ilhan Berk (1916) a continuously evolved along a French modernist/Western line that provided a means for the creation of a personal poetry that preeminently explored techniques and discovered the possibilities of poetic language. Berk adhered to a socialist-inspired poetic tradition until the middle of the 1950’s; from this time on, which also corresponds to the birth of the poetic movement called le second renouveau, to which he willingly belonged, he began to create for himself a coherent poetic language, but questionable from the standpoint of originality; taking his subtance from the works of Rimbaud, Mallarmé, Apollinaire, surrealists, (Artaud, Breton, Eluard, Char, Aragon) and de Ponge. This eclectic poetics used as material history, cities and things, briefly anything for pure language that Berk ‘divided’ and ‘twisted’ for a half a century like a multicolored ball of yarn; it treats the problem of ‘context’ and ‘representation’ in poetry as the only basis of ‘language’ and it brings a breath of fresh air to Turkish modern poetry
